Album design for Beth Walthew’s CD ‘Lovers & Liars’.
Having seen some of my work I was supplied with the three images of Beth and her musicians and given the text in a word document and told to do whatever I thought suited the artist’s style, what was wanted was a rustic feel. I used some images from old printers example book and photoshopped other images and scans to make most of the artwork. The CD tray has images behind a clear tray and a butterfly in the centre where the CD is placed.
The main album type is done with the Fontin Family. You can see the text on the CD took some time to do but worked out great! You can buy the CD here: www.bethwalthew.com
The Soft Machine is the title of a novel by William S. Burroughs, first published in 1961. It was originally composed using the cut-up and fold-in techniques, this inspired my design on the cover. Taking a photo of Burroughs, cutting it up and shifting the edits around. I think it is as abstract as the original [right], but still communicates the name and title well.
I recently took a trip to California, while there I took a lot of photos and film. The film ended up in a youtube video [see below] and the photos I made into a book you can buy via Blurb.
Some print work I made with Illustrator for Coca-Cola advert mock ups. Using the bottle image I added liquid and bubbles as well as each countries flag and a colour scheme for each to test effects in Illustrator.
Task:
Web and Myspace design for the tribute band ‘The Rollin’ Clones’.
Being unable to use any copywrite logos or images of the The Rolling Stones I used images of the bands promotional and live photos to make posters of old tours to suggest Rock concerts and musical history.

Task:
My Final Project at University was to brand an Ethanol Fuel Company in a new way that is apart from Fossil Fuel companies but make it look traditional. In the PDF below I show the whole process of looking at modern abstract logos to visually simple brands.

Task:
In a University project I had to make a form of Hi-end packaging so I asked to do a Cd design. Due to the “high end” specification and standard the work needed I was advised to do a box set or special edition cd. After seeing the artwork for Enya’s cd Amarantine I set out to redesign it with a bigger emphasis on craft and style fitting to her past productions but also to modernise them.
I started getting images of my sketchbook and printing them off on handmade papers and watercolour styled papers. From then I would scan them in again and after cut them up, arrange them on scanner and print them off again on handmade and textured papers. Some of the distressed effects were made by hand and with Photoshop and Illustrator.
Task:
As part of a University self promotion project I had to create a ‘wacky’ item to send to prospective employers. I created a foe medical box with creative pills inside [smarties]. This also got me to render artwork ready to send to printers with two tone colouring, box grids and machine cutting and scoring outlines as well as inserts for instructions with my details on them.
Task: Design some samples to be used in fabrics and wallpapers.
The first sample of ‘Army Dreamers’ uses the images of solders to be used on cushions and curtains. The second sample of the set is for wallpaper or the main sofa print. Paintings (c) The Napoleon Series. The second Pattern set ‘Animals’ Are for fabrics or stationary. They range from retro to traditional in colours. The ‘Linearis’ set is a simple set of black and white patterns.
Task: A University project to design the image of Vital Communities. The artwork had to link into communities and craft. My suggestions below where based on needlecraft as it is a international pastime and also every community can relate to it. The brief required a poster for a event called “The Crow Show”, a Logo a invitation to a musical and a letterhead. I designed the type for the whole project myself.
Vital Communities is a unique action research project, initially over three years and with the aim of conducting the study over a 15-year period. Through a vibrant, innovative and inclusive programme of high-quality creative activities (dance, drama, film, literature, music, visual art), the project aims to demonstrate the impact of the arts upon individual and community development and to investigate whether the arts have a positive impact on the aspirations, achievement and attitudes of specific communities across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
Task:
A University project was to make a modern image for Bizet’s “Carmen”. The brief was to subvert the meaning of the play by inventing the theatre company who would perform the play, and then invent there interpretation of the play. Then make the poster for the production.
Below: A feature for serial advertising with the images progressing into the next frame, like the scenes of a play.
Task:
During some free time over my University holidays I started to make a version of the book ‘Alice in Wonderland’ using cut up pieces of newspaper and scanning them in. I cut out the Alphabet from many newspapers and then arranged then on the scanner to create the first chapter of the book. I got the words for the book from the Project Gutenberg website. The images are made from the original illustrations with added found items such as the patterns inside envelopes.
Task: As part of my university projects I had to make a campaigns for company that I should invent. Most people choose drinks or cars but I wanted to see what could be done about rape. I invented a company called “Rape Line” it could have been translated into any helpline but in my mind it was a uni-sexual rape helpline. So the adverts had to work in many ways.
The advert has a main line of the same of a person who would be the attacker or the victim and then a stapling for the helpline. It is two lines that saves explanation of what has happened and leaves it to the viewer to imagine what has happened. The first for the campaign would have been a uni-sexual name such as Sam. The photos taken at night also give the limited perspective.
Task:
A visual advert with a hard hitting message was another project I had done for university. Using balloons as a metaphor for people and blood cells. the notion of there being one odd balloon or cell helps people think “it could be you”. Again it’s using a image to say what all the words can’t.
Task: In building the website I was thinking that the client wanted people to grown inside themselves so I demonstrated this with the trees as a person. This formed the main basis of the work I presented as the main content was just text based.
Task:
A website for the Cambridge County Council to promote disability inclusion networks. The sites design came from a meeting when someone talked about “social circles” and I thought of a Lily pad. From that a garden grew in my mind as you can see in the designs and video below.
Task:
Design a A4 Calendar for a Fischerspooner fansite. Due to copyrights I couldn’t use artworks from the bands album or logos. To get around this it was made from images from live shows. To use just a photo of the artists would have been dull and simple so I created artworks with the photos. As well as displaying the photo in a different way I used the artworks I had created to make a large poster to be included with the Calendar. The printer wanted to add the dates so I was asked to leave them blank.
Task:
Design a advert and booklet for the website cbgay.com
The www.cbgay.com booklet was a social guide for the Cambridge UK LGBT community and featured adverts for any social event. My task was to over see the design of the whole product and to design adverts for clubs or social groups that didn’t have any adverts themselves as well as form a image for the booklet in coordination with the website.
Task:
For the CBGay.com website I created a image that was relevant to the LGBT communities without being stereotypical. To aim was to have a website that people could look at without feeling dogma or feeling the website would draw attention to them. The people on the website where ‘blanked’ out to be members of the LGBT Community to show that they could be around you and you not notice until its hi-lighted. The site ran from 2003-2006. The last image is an advert for the site.
